A Draft Public Health (Amendment) Bill 2010 is being published today Wednesday, 1 September 2010, for public consultation before considering its introduction into law.

The purpose of this Ordinance is to establish a Health Protection Board which shall be responsible for the implementation and application of all public health related measures on St Helena.  A new part is also inserted in the Public Health Ordinance, Cap. 49, to incorporate and ensure enforcement of the International Health Regulations issued by the World Health Organization; copies of these regulations are available from the Public Health & Social Services Department, or on the Internet website www.who.int/ihr

During the next few days, Councillor Cyril Gunnell, Chairman of the Health and Social Welfare Committee plans to discuss the Bill via radio talks and phone-ins thus giving the public every opportunity to express their views.

It is envisaged that the Bill will be presented to the next formal session of Legislative Council currently scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 13 October 2010.

The deadline for written comments to be submitted to the Clerk of Councils for consideration by Councillors will be Monday, 13 September 2010.
