Motion of Thanks Speech by the Hon Mr Ian Hansen, MLA:

Mr Speaker, Your Excellency, Honourable Members, Your Excellency in your address you mentioned many if not all of the challenges facing the Falklands over the next coming years. In no particular order I will comment on one or two of those.

Hydrocarbons, of course, are possibly our biggest challenge. I guess where we stand at the moment is we have to be ready and prepared to accept what will happen when oil is eventually taken out of the sea or we have to accept the fact that it may not happen so basically we are being prepared either way it will go.

On public diplomacy, I believe it is important to get out and visit countries but it is equally important that we invite others here to see our country and our way of life and to sample our way of life. I think and believe that our strategy over the last few years has been successful. Obviously we can only do so much with the small population. But I would like to extend my thanks to those who give their time to support us on overseas trips. This also includes our sportsmen and women who continue year after year do a sterling job in representing the Falkland Islands world-wide. Along with us they continue to spread our message of self-determination and internal self-government. I thank you very much for that.

The Honourable Phyl Rendell and the Honourable Roger Edwards mentioned Agriculture and farming and I agree entirely with their sentiments that it has been a difficult season for agriculture in some respects. Finishing of animals for the Abattoir hasnít been particularly easy. Wool prices havenít been as high as they have been in the past few years but there still is optimism in the Farming community and that is being seen by our on-going grants and augmenting income by beef herds so we can continue to support FIMCO and the Abattoir.

And as the Honourable Roger Edwards mentioned that the payments that we make towards the Abattoir and FIMCO are actually returned in spades to the farming community and are very welcome by farmers who support the Abattoir.

Just to conclude, Your Excellency, our internal affairs are very important and I think the continued monitoring and updating of our transport and communications system is to my mind top of the list. Our road network and internet and phone coverage is vital to all businesses both in town and in Stanley as other industries like FIGAS and the Ferry. And I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those in those involved in those components of Government. They do a great job and we need them.

Your Excellency I thank you for your address and I support the Motion.
