Falklands : GENERAL MANAGER OF FIDC GIVES ACTIVITY REPORT TO BOARD MEETING

Marc Boucher, General Manager of FIDC has overviewed briefly certain corporate and GM activities that are underway and are either additional to the normal corporate and project activities or otherwise merit informing the Board.  The report was made during the FIDB committee meeting held on Wednesday, 05 December 2012. 


 


He began by saying that Financial Controller Recruitment was successful.  All necessary approval have been obtained, the person is scheduled to start in his position on 7th January 2013.  The successful candidate for PA to the General Manager started in the position on 10th October 2012.  Following recruitment & interviews the successful candidate for Bookkeeper/Office coordinator commenced work on 19th November 2012 and following the advertising of the opening, a successful candidate for Business Analyst was selected and will starting in the position on 17th December 2012.


 


Works progresses with FITB and FIG officials in regard to Air Links. The services of an external consultant have been secured to review the financial models. This ensures validation by a third party of the projected revenue and expenses, in order to advance the project.


 


Members of the FIDC staff continue to work with cruise ship operators in order to promote the use of Stanley, as a location for passenger exchange to take place. This project is closely associated to increase air capacity. Since the last meeting of the FIDB on 10th October 2012, some operators have given more firm support for an exchange program in Stanley.


 


Michael Betts, FIDC, has accompanied the Falklands delegation that attended the World Travel Mart WTM) which took place in London from 5th to 8th November, 2012. Michael was responsible to collect information on lodge products of similar nature and to promote to opportunity for investment in the Falklands. Mr Betts met with thirty plus operators and was able to make solid contacts during the WTM.


 


In order to reflect the need to of the business community in the upcoming update of the four year FIDC business plan 2013/14. The General Manager of the FIDC met with a number local businesses and stakeholders such as representatives of; the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce, Falkland Islands Fisheries Company Association, Rural Business Association. Some of the issues that were raised included; access to increase level of loans for business opportunities associated to oil and gas development and shell fish testing for commercialization.


 


Business Climate Survey


As in past years, FIDC has coordinated a Business Climate Survey in order to identify expectation of future business opportunities and barriers. This year, FIDC will be partnering with the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce in defining the different questions which will be asked of the businesses. However, FIDC will continue to gather and manage this analysis of the responses.
