UNIQUE HOTEL GROUP CONSIDERS ST HELENA

A team of six from the Mantis Collection, a collection of privately owned boutique hotels and eco-escapes across the globe, will undertake an exploratory eight day visit to St Helena from 23 January, to see if the Island has the right ingredients for its offering and philosophy.

The team comprises Adrian Gardiner, the Chairman of the Mantis Collection and his wife Shirleyanne, Graham Vass, the Development General Manager for the group and his wife Megan, Graham Moon, Chief Executive Officer Mantis Development and John Erasmus, Accountant.

St Helena has lobbied the Mantis Collection over the last few years and has built relationships with Adrian and Peter Fleck, Owner of the ‘Last Word Group’ boutique hotels – part of the Mantis Collection with three hotels in Cape Town.

The Mantis mantra is ‘Unearthing the Exceptional’ and the reason why they are interested in St Helena. Their visit is the result of a recent trade mission to Cape Town where His Excellency Governor Capes, Julian Morris, Chief Executive for Economic Development, Stuart Planner, Commercial Property Director of Enterprise St Helena (ESH), Cathy Alberts, Tourism Director and Tom Kelly from DfID met representatives from the hotel group.

The Island is taking full advantage of the group’s visit and placing great importance on preparing a programme for their stay. Any commitment of the award-winning group to building a hotel on the Island could be the catalyst for a stream of high value investment interest in St Helena and, in light of this, ESH has specifically assembled a portfolio of opportunities that reflect the forms of development and types of opportunity that might complement the Mantis Collection.

While here, the group will be able to have discussions with key stakeholders in the business and tourism sectors. They will also visit the airport site and participate in a variety of tourism offerings on St Helena, including sport fishing, dolphin watching, diving/snorkelling, the Napoleonic tour, the Boer Tour and a selection of walking tours. It is hoped that the weather will remain favourable to enable the group to see St Helena at its beautiful best.

The Mantis Collection is split into two categories, with 30 boutique hotels across South Africa, Nigeria, England, Holland, France, Argentina, Panama, Ecuador and the USA - and 23 eco-escapes, environmentally friendly and sustainable tourist attractions, including a tree top hotel in Sweden and an ice hotel during the winter months, cabins on the Galapagos Islands, and a camp in Antarctica.
