COUNCILLOR RAYMOND WILLIAMS DEPARTS FOR FALKLANDS CONFERENCE

Councillor Raymond Williams departs the Island today Friday 25 January, to attend the 43rd British Island and Mediterranean Region (BIMR) Conference on the Falkland Islands from 11-15 February 2013.

The theme for this year’s conference, hosted by the Falklands Islands Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is ‘Self-Determination and its Role in Self Government and Devolution’.

Topics to be discussed at the conference include, Self Determination and how theories have been applied in recent years across the world; The Challenges of Governance in Smaller Territories and Regions; and Experiences in the Development of Greater Regional and National Autonomy. Delegates will also participate in a Falkland Life Tour at Bluff Cove, to learn about the spirited pioneering way of Falkland Island life.

Councillor Williams said:

‘I feel honoured to be able to attend the 43rd BIMR CPA Conference as this will be the first time I have attended one during my time in office as a Legislative Councillor. The theme for this conference is ‘Self Determination and its Role in Self Governance and Devolution’ and it will be interesting to listen to other delegates on how their political set-up compares with St Helena as a UK funded territory which, in my opinion, is not ready for self determination at this point in time.

‘I hope that I will be successful in presenting the views of St Helena and will contribute to the relevant discussions as I see fit.’

After the conference, Councillor Williams will also undertake visits to various establishments on the Falklands relevant to his Council Committee portfolio.

Councillor Williams will give a full report of his attendance at the Conference when he returns to St Helena on 21 April 2013, following a period of overseas leave.

During Councillor William’s absence, Councillor Mervyn Yon will act as Chairman of the Natural Resources, Development, and Environment Committee.
