The St Helena Fishermen’s Association held its Annual General Meeting at
Pilling School on Saturday, 21 September at 10am.

In attendance for the first item of business were Mr Rob Midwinter and
Mrs Tammy Williams from Enterprise St Helena, who provided those present with a
brief update on current and future fishing developments, and promised continued
support from Enterprise St Helena to the fishing industry.

The Fishermen’s Association Constitution and various Policies of the
Association were also accepted at this meeting, and signed accordingly by all
Members of the Association present.

The assembly was given interesting and informative updates for the
report year 2012 – 2013 by the outgoing Chairman and Treasurer of the
Committee, and a new Committee for 2013 – 2014 was elected as follows:

Chairman Mr Trevor Thomas

Vice Chairman Mr Daryl Harris

Fishermen’s Rep Mr Waylon Thomas

Boat-Owners Rep Mr Keith Yon

Secretary Miss Gina Benjamin

Treasurer MrsChristine C

Caswell

One of the important items discussed following the election of the new
Committee was the worrying recent increase in the price of diesel fuel, which
will have a serious impact on the fishing industry which is already in a
crisis.

The assembly also heard that two members of the fishing industry will be
visiting Cape Town on the next sailing of the RMS St Helena to view a potential
offshore fishing vessel currently berthed in Hout Bay; in the work-up towards
hopefully obtaining our own offshore fishing boat to fish our offshore
seamounts in the near future.

Gina Benjamin

Secretary – SHFA
